100th anniversy

March 6, 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding surgeon, teacher and public figure Lev Matveevich Yevtushenko. His contribution to the development of medicine and education is invaluable, especially for his native Astrakhan State Medical Institute (now the Astrakhan State Medical University).

Biography and achievements

Lev Matveyevich was born on March 6, 1925. Already in his youth, he showed an interest in medicine, choosing the path of serving people. However, fate decreed otherwise: the beginning of the Great Patriotic War interrupted peaceful life. In February 1943, when Lev Matveyevich was only 18 years old, he volunteered for the front. His military merits were marked by orders and medals, including the Order of the Red Star. But in the battle near Andreyevka in October 1943, Lev Matveyevich received a serious wound, which forever left an imprint on his health.

After the war, despite the consequences of his injury, Yevtushenko entered the Astrakhan Medical Institute, which he graduated from in 1949. This was followed by clinical residency in surgery. He began his career at the institute as an assistant in the department of general surgery, gradually moving up the career ladder.

In the 1950s, Lev Matveevich actively participated in public life, leading student groups that traveled to the virgin lands.

In the 1960s, he defended his PhD thesis and became an associate professor of the general surgery department. From 1962 to 1963, he headed the general surgery department, but due to health reasons, since he could no longer operate, he transferred to the position of associate professor of the department of operative surgery and topographic anatomy.

Scientific activity and innovation

Lev Matveevich made a significant contribution to the development of surgery in Astrakhan. Together with Professor A.I. Bogatov, he performed the first commissurotomy operation for mitral valve stenosis. This achievement became an important stage in the development of cardiac surgery in the region. In addition, Yevtushenko developed and implemented a unique method of pancreatoduodenal resection for pancreatic cancer, which significantly improved the treatment results for cancer patients.

Community Service and Leadership

In addition to scientific work, Yevtushenko devoted much energy to administrative and public work. He held the post of dean of the medical faculty, and from 1972 until the end of his life he was vice-rector for academic work. For many years he headed the final examination committee of the institute, ensuring a high level of training for future doctors. Yevtushenko also played an important role in the party; he was repeatedly elected secretary of the party organization of the institute.

Heritage and Memory

Despite the fact that Lev Matveyevich passed away in December 1975, his legacy lives on. People who consider themselves his students work within the walls of the university. Yevtushenko’s family continued their father’s work: his daughter, son, son-in-law and grandchildren dedicated their lives to medicine.

The name of Lev Matveyevich Yevtushenko will forever remain in the history of the Astrakhan State Medical University as a symbol of dedication to the cause, scientific research and loyalty to the ideals of serving society.

High school students from Astrakhan schools took part in career guidance testing at Astrakhan State Medical University.

At the beginning of the testing, the staff of the pre-university training center told the schoolchildren about the challenges and opportunities associated with a medical career and answered the children’s questions.

The students took a career guidance test using the method of E.A. Klimov. The test results can serve as a starting point for further study of professional areas corresponding to the identified preferences. It is important to consider that the method is not definitive, but only indicates probable directions of development.

This format of the meeting will allow schoolchildren to better understand themselves and make a more informed choice of their future profession.

On March 5, the VIII Volgograd Conference of the Association of Children’s Allergists and Immunologists of Russia (ADAIR) was held in Volgograd    in the format of an online broadcast. The conference was organized by the Association of Children’s Allergists and Immunologists of Russia.

The growth of allergic diseases among both adults and children in the country demonstrates the importance of finding modern and effective methods of prevention, early diagnosis and timely therapy. The allergic nature of diseases poses many questions to outpatient pediatricians. At the event, famous speakers discussed the tactics of early detection and adequate control of atopic diseases, discussed new clinical guidelines for bronchial asthma in children, phenotypic heterogeneity and vectors of personalization of therapy for allergic rhinitis, drug therapy and other areas in pediatrics.

An employee of the Astrakhan State Medical University, professor, and doctor of medical sciences Gulnara Sagitova presented to the audience clinically oriented material on the condition of the skin in the most common pathological conditions in the first year of life.

On March 3, students from School No. 36 in Astrakhan visited the departments of Astrakhan State Medical University – physical education and fundamental chemistry – as part of career guidance work.

At the Department of Fundamental Chemistry, schoolchildren got acquainted with the specialty “Pharmacy”. The teachers of the department told about the history of the formation of the pharmaceutical faculty and career opportunities for future pharmacists. The students also visited the classrooms and laboratories of the department.

At the Department of Physical Education, schoolchildren were told about sports sections, about the achievements of university teams that successfully participate in city and regional competitions. Teachers held competitions for schoolchildren according to GTO standards and combined relays, in which the participants demonstrated a high level of physical fitness.

On March 4, a master class on first aid for schoolchildren was held at the simulation clinic of the Astrakhan State Medical University.

This initiative aims to teach teenagers basic first aid skills and raise their awareness of the importance of such knowledge.

The head of the Federal Accreditation Center, Ruslan Falchari, held a lesson in which schoolchildren received theoretical and practical knowledge about the necessary actions to help victims before the arrival of doctors.

The children mastered the universal algorithm for providing first aid and practiced cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills on a special simulator mannequin.

“ We plan to hold such master classes on a regular basis at our university, as they contribute to the formation of a safety culture among young people and increase interest in medical specialties ,” said Ruslan Albertovich.
